Corto Maltese & Silver Surfer - The Odyssey : across Seas and Universes is a fictive exhibition made as an academic team project. Led by the question of a journey can transform our inner self, I was charged of translating that question into the project's creative direction, branding and trailer.
Working on the visual direction of the exhibition, we started to research what makes both series unique visually.
To go further, the visuals of Corto Maltese and Silver Surfer, despite being quite different, show a true effort on the visual ambiance and personality ; with inclusion of more plastic arts elements such as paint, ink and paper drawings.
In our identity, Corto and the Surfer's relation is like the Yin and Yang, in harmony but each unique in their way ; reflecting their character while mixing best of both worlds.
The logotype emphasises an illustrative typographic style through the use of fonts and colours. This also allows for a clear hierarchy within the title, whilst the subtitle adds a touch of dynamism and evokes the world of comic books. The fluid effect serves as a subtle reminder of the common element in these works: water.
The brand's color scheme use tones from both comics with a Deep Blue and Creme White at its core.
Both are good examples of the brand's goal to suggest each series' ambiance and relation to invite people to discover their worlds and what they have to offer togheter.
The trailer was another core communication element in the exhibition promotional campaign plan.
For this, the concept of textures, plastic art and paper usage was kept. In addition, the ideas of journey and story are interpreted as a continuous path with different chapters, navigating on the paper canvas. The goal was also for the visuals to reflect the audio led by a voiceover of the exhibition's introduction : Like a visual and sound poem.
Working personally on this, various effects were used to complete this stop-motion and animated art look with plays on grains, texture overlays & masking and scribbles wrapped into a no-visual-cuts montage throughout the whole video.
